Description

The Nymölla mill made the decision to begin using bar codes for receiving, inventory and packaging just then, was that the number of specific products that they handled doubled (as a result of another mill closing) from approximately 500 to about 1000 products. As a result, this was the perfect time to introduce a new bar code system.

Each of the mill's five packaging suppliers were asked to add bar codes to their products – whether they are ream wrappers, corrugated boxes, etc. the bar codes are actually generated with the supplier at the time the products are ordered. the supplier logs into their own module of the mill's Business system for warehouse/ordering/production which keeps track of the products that Nymölla needs to have delivered. When the supplier sees that there is a need for an item, they make sure that production and delivery happen. At the same time, a work order and a unique bar code for the items to be delivered are generated. this bar code is placed on the outside of the particular packaging unit.

When the product is delivered to the mill, a forklift operator scans it either with a Datalogic Ds6400 bar code reader which is fitted onto the forklift, or with a handheld Powerscan® PM8300 rugged mobile bar code reader from Datalogic scanning. the information contained in the bar code tells the operator what product is being received and where it should be placed in the warehouse. since the bar code had already been generated by the supplier, errors are greatly reduced.
