The company manufactured the Nucleus 24 Multichannel Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) in conjunction with the House Ear Institute (HEI). Over the past 21 years, HEI researchers have worked to improve surgical placement of the ABI device, electrical safety and electrode stability, along with device reliability. The ABI is the first device specifically designed to bypass the auditory nerve to transmit sound directly to the brainstem, allowing the recipient to receive environmental sounds and speech. After implantation, patients work with hearing professionals to retrain their brains to understand and interpret new sound signals.
