e-steth is a new digital stethoscope that tunes in selectively to cardiac and pulmonary sounds. The doctor selects the organ for examination, and can listen to this alone without interference from the neighboring organs. The stethoscope also detects sounds that are barely audible or inaudible using conventional instruments, such as aortic regurgitation and pericardial friction rub. Lung sounds are distinctively audible, and clear identification of pleural noise allows early diagnosis of pleurisy. Where traditional acoustic methods may detect no noise associated with asthmatic conditions, doctors using this device can clearly distinguish wheezing, evaluate bronchial spasticity and even assess which lung fields are involved with disease.

The stethoscope can also produce visuals of heart and lung signals on a computer screen. These signals can be saved to a disc or hard drive, and, using special transmission software called CardioMail, the files of these visual images and sounds can be viewed, printed, faxed or e-mailed, permitting an objective aide in diagnosis by specialists in another location. The physician can also compare new and old recordings at the same time, allowing for the detection of any significant changes. The saved files of heart and lung images and sounds also protect the physician, clinic or hospital in terms of insurance and medical liability.
