Hotel-Dieu Grace First Hospital In Canada To Adopt Autopulse

CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ZOLL Medical Corporation (Nasdaq GS: ZOLL), a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, announced today that Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital (HDGH) in Windsor, Ontario is the first hospital in Canada to have installed the Company's AutoPulse® Non-Invasive Cardiac Support Pump. The major cardiac and trauma center, which was also the first hospital in Canada to place AEDs in nursing units, has two AutoPulse units available in the facility's Critical Care Unit and Emergency Room, and a third device as a back-up.

AutoPulse helps provide the consistent chest compressions called for by the 2005 American Heart Association Guidelines followed by Canada. It is an automated, portable device with an easy-to-use, load-distributing LifeBand® that squeezes the entire chest in an uninterrupted "hands-free" manner, improving blood flow to the heart and brain during cardiac arrest. Additionally, it offers the benefit of freeing up rescuers to focus on other life-saving interventions.

Within the first week of the device being installed, the AutoPulse was being used independently by HDGH staff that had been trained, according to Marg Balzer, Professional Practice Leader at HGDH. The nursing staff immediately supported AutoPulse use in a Code Blue situation due to its ability to provide high-quality compressions.

"Our critical care areas have experienced code situations where the AutoPulse has been used more than once on the same patient. It is very portable, making it easily accessible for use on a patient that you are concerned about," Balzer said. "AutoPulse ensures that we are providing consistent compressions that are hard and fast with good recoil. It takes away any variances in rescuer technique."

"Utilization of the AutoPulse supports our continued commitment to our community by allowing us to blend cutting edge technology with compassionate care," said Joe O'Beid, Biomedical Technologist.

"We're extremely pleased that Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital has adopted this new technology to improve patient care and has so quickly realized clinical improvements," said Richard A. Packer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZOLL.

Health Canada, the equivalent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, approved the AutoPulse for use in Canada in November 2003. Currently, it is in use by several EMS agencies in the country. To date, approximately 4,000 AutoPulse units have been deployed in hospitals and emergency services worldwide.

HDGH also uses ZOLL AED Plus® throughout the organization, and has 15 ZOLL R Series® and eight M Series® CCT defibrillators placed in the hospital's critical care areas.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest

SCA claims more than 1 million lives each year worldwide. It is the leading cause of unexpected death in the world and strikes without warning. Currently, only about 5 percent of victims survive; 95 percent will die from SCA. SCA is an abrupt disruption of the heart's function, which causes a lack of blood flow to vital organs.
