Lakeland Regional Health System Deploys Novo Innovations Exchange Platform To Connect Hospital Systems To EMRs Of 70 Affiliated Physicians

ALPHARETTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Novo Innovations, the leader in software-agent technologies to improve health information exchange, today announced a multi-year contract with Lakeland Regional Health System (LRHS) of St. Joseph, Mich. LRHS has deployed Novo's agent-based healthcare exchange platform to approximately 70 affiliated physicians representing 12 practices over the last two years. Under the agreement, LRHS can now deploy Novo's solution to all remaining affiliated practices.

The Novo Grid allows LRHS to deliver patient data electronically to the affiliated practices' ambulatory electronic medical record (EMR) systems, increasing the speed in which the information is processed. Discrete lab results, EKG text results, radiology reports, transcriptions, admission and discharge summaries, and surgical notes are now transmitted from the LRHS hospital systems directly into practice EMRs in a matter of minutes. With the Novo system filtering and deduplicating the data, the physician practices receive only the patient information that pertains to them. LRHS plans to expand its use of the Novo platform to accommodate the two-way exchange of data, which will enable practices to place lab orders and schedule procedures with LRHS, among other services.

According to Emil Gallay, chief information officer, LRHS, the health system was prompted into action when one its most influential physician practices challenged the organization to electronically deliver clinical results directly into its soon-to-be-installed EMR system within 30 days. LRHS selected Novo's exchange platform based on agent-grid technology and the implementation easily met the practice's 30-day deadline.

"In our community, practices increasingly expect health systems to improve the way patient data is delivered," says Gallay. "Practices with EMRs are demanding electronic interfaces that transmit records directly into their systems, where the data will be immediately available to physicians. The Novo platform deploys quickly, is highly cost-efficient and interfaces our patient record systems with a wide range of ambulatory EMRs in use in our community, including systems by GE, Greenway, eMDs, GEMMS, Altos Solutions and all three Allscripts products."

Novo has developed a rapid process for certification from vendors for which there is not yet an interface, which speeds deployment in any community. In addition to interfaces within the LRHS community, Novo has developed electronic EMR interfaces for use with vendors such as eClinicalWorks, NextGen, MEDENT, Emdeon and others.

"We're gratified that we can help Lakeland Regional Health System meet the expectations of its affiliated physicians," says Robert Connely, chief executive officer, Novo Innovations. "Like many health systems, patient data at LRHS has long been generated and stored electronically. Yet until recently, when a patient's medical information was sent to the referring physician, the information was distributed in a paper-based format. Now, patient records go directly into the practice EMR, where it is immediately available to physicians."
