Bemis Manufacturing Company, Health Care Products Groupcanisters, featuring a patented drainage port, are designed for use with the Eductor Fluid Management System, which drains the contents from the canister directly into the sanitary sewer. This method is said to reduce splattering, splashing, and aerosolizing of blood droplets and provides an engineering control for infectious fluid waste disposal. The canister has a solid base until it is ready to be drained. The drainage port is opened by the fluid management system to form a pathway for the drainage process without the canister lid ever having to be removed.
