Medline Introduces New Odor-Control Reusable Underpad
Revolutionary HaloShield Technology Reduces Odor While Harnesing Chlorine Killing Bacteria
Mundelein, IL -- Medline Industries, Inc., the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies, launched a reusable underpad that will help control odors, as its revolutionary HaloShield technology harnesses chlorine and kills bacteria.
"Controlling odor is a tremendous challenge for nursing homes and other health care settings. HaloShield's chlorine harnessing power goes to the root of the problem attacking and killing bacteria that causes odor," said President of Medline's Textiles Division Ron Barth "Lab tests show that when bacteria comes into contact with chlorine bleach anchored to a HaloShield treated sheet, 99.9 percent of the microbes are killed within minutes."
The underpads are infused with the same treatment introduced in Medline's HaloShield sheets, released in August. The patented technology in HaloShield is a durable coating that binds chlorine molecules, used during a regular wash cycle, to nearly any textile. The coating is actually rechargeable meaning the antimicrobial properties of the chlorine are renewed each time the sheet is laundered in an EPA-registered chlorine-based sanitizer. The HaloShield treatment maintains its ability to bind chlorine to the product throughout its life cycle.
Health care laundry protocols have long relied on chlorine-based sanitizers to kill bacteria in bed linens and other materials. While chlorine is known as one of the best antimicrobial agents in the world, its power has been limited because it evaporates from untreated fabric soon after laundering.
"We're very excited about this technology and its ability to combat major health care concerns from controlling odor to infection control," said Barth. "We're looking forward to launching HaloShield's next infection control tool, in lab coats and scrubs that will help prevent cross contamination as physicians and clinicians go from room to room in health care settings."
Medline, the leading provider of textiles to the health care industry in the U.S., licenses HaloShield from Vanson HaloSource, with exclusive rights to distribute HaloShield-treated hospital sheets, pillowcases, scrubs, gowns and reusable underpads in North and South America.
