The NurseCall system provides wireless technology for patient calls transmitted on radio frequencies safe for use with medical equipment, eliminating wiring. The system consists of a local unit, multi-function transmitters on the wall of each room, and mini-transmitters with five-year-life batteries. Mini-transmitters can be placed by beds, in bathrooms, or worn around residents' necks for personal push-button or pull-cord safety. Wrist transmitters can be worn like a watch by residents. Any part of the system can be reconfigured to designate new locations. In an emergency, a patient presses the single button on the personal transmitter or the wall unit's red button , triggering an alarm at the local unit. The location of the call then shows up on the unit's display panel.

Multiple calls are displayed in the order they come in, with distinct sounding smoke detector alarms taking the highest priority. By pressing a button on the local unit, you can review all calls received. Up to 38 calls can be stored in the unit, and when it's interfaced to a computer, an unlimited number of calls can be stored for long-term use. The product automatically checks batteries in the unit and informs the user when they need to be recharged. It also features an automatic self-checking feature that monitors the system every 24 hours to ensure that it is functioning properly, and will keep functioning for up to five hours in case of power failure.

A single local unit monitors up to 300 transmitters within a 100-ft radius. For more coverage, users can wire as many as 16 additional units to the main local unit, each adding the same range of radio reception. Once caregivers get to the room, they can either press the green button to shut off the alarm or the blue button to summon more help. The nurses' station can track how long each action takes by giving caregivers keys to insert and remove from the wall unit when they start and finish care. Also, the use of keys keeps the nurses' station informed concerning the whereabouts of caregivers.
