Unotron designs, manufactures and markets washable data input and security devices that use its patented SpillSeal® technology, which, the company says, conforms to IP66 and NEMA 4X standards and are of high quality. Unotron's washable products are ideally suited for healthcare, education, government, personal and commercial environments:

  • Mitigate the spread of infection;
  • Integrate with existing technology (plug-and-play);
  • Are easy to use, clean and disinfect; and
  • Eliminate the need to frequently replace keyboards.

Unotron's washable optical mouse product line is available with or without a scroll wheel in standard or overmolded rubberized finish. The newly patented Unotron ScrollSeal Washable Optical 3-button Mouse and Unotron SteriMax Washable Optical 3-button Mouse complement Unotron's SpillSeal® corded and wireless computer keyboards and receivers, as well as its SmartRest SRC5 Smartcard Readers and external SAC2 Standalone Smartcard Readers.

A particularly "sticky situation" was washed away without incident when someone at St. Francis Hospital accidentally spilled Maalox® all over the computer keyboard (Maalox® is a registered trademark of Novartis Consumer Health). The Unotron keyboard was cleaned and remained completely functional, thanks to its SpillSeal® technology which seals the keyboard against liquid or airborne penetration and allows for repeated immersion in water as well as frequent applications of commercial disinfectants without compromising effectiveness or user friendly touch and feel.

"To reduce cross-contamination of infection or disease among PC users, we are using Unotron's SpillSeal® washable computer keyboards," explains Kathleen Clark, RN, Systems Analyst, Siemens Medical Solutions, who is part of an outsourced IT team assigned to St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, NY. "We've been testing the keyboards on site with excellent results at high-volume locations in two of the nursing units that have gone live with Siemens MAK, our barcode medication administration application."

Clark recalls the particularly "sticky" situation when someone inadvertently spilled Maalox® all over the keyboard. "This liquid is difficult to clean off a smooth surface, let alone a computer keyboard," says Clark. "The Unotron keyboard washed easily, leaving no residue. A traditional keyboard would have been totally useless and discarded. But, after a brisk wash, Unotron's SpillSeal® keyboard was immediately back in service – keys functioning normally – quickly relieving the Maalox® mess," she concludes.

According to Joseph H. Carabello, Director of Unotron, Inc., "This anecdote clearly illustrates the value of our technology – from both utilization and cost-effective perspectives. Computer keyboards seem to always find themselves in harm's way. With Unotron's SpillSeal® patented technology, a simple rinse obviates the need to replace the product."
