St. John's Hosptial IT department backs up differential changes in data daily, and conducts weekly full backups. The hospital stores more than 20TB for full backups, duplicates those backups to tape, then takes them offsite for Disaster Recovery (DR) practices. St. John's Hospital electronic data includes patient medical records, email, active directory settings and other business data. This data must be stored and safeguarded while also meeting the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' HIPAA privacy regulations. The act requires healthcare institutions to store and protect patient records by implementing standards and requirements for the electronic transmission, storage, and destruction of personal health information.
